The man who allegedly murdered a woman in a south St. Louis home has been released from jail on bond, leaving the victim’s family is angry and scared.
Accused of brutally murdering 24-year-old Lauren Bach last summer, 43-year-old Raheem Thorpe was released from jail on Thursday after making bail.
“For this to happen almost a year to the day that the crime was committed is heartbreaking and it’s scary,” said a family member of Bach, who did not want to be identified.
In early June 2014, Bach was found dead in a bathtub with blunt force trauma to her head, neck and back in the 6100 block of Alaska. Thorpe was arrested shortly after on charges of first degree murder.
“She was a lovely girl and fun and she belonged to something much bigger than her drug addiction: a family. She had nieces and nephews and she didn’t deserve to die in this way,” said Bach’s relative.
Authorities said Bach and Thorpe knew one another and were engaged in a fight over drugs when she was killed.
After he was arrested on first degree murder charges, a judge originally gave Thorpe no bond, keeping him in jail. However, Judge Michael Mullen set Thorpe’s bond at $100,000 secured in January, allowing him to get out of jail on Thursday.
“I understand he needs his day in court, but in the interim, he shouldn’t be free to possibly commit another crime,” said Bach’s family member. “It’s not enough to keep the streets of St. Louis safe, that’s the bottom line.”
