Carl Griffith Sr. was murdered by the Black gang member as part of a murder-for-hire scheme.

The Gary man who murdered a Portage tow truck driver in a murder-for-hire scheme received the maximum possible sentence short of the death penalty.

On Friday, Porter County Superior Judge Roger Bradford sentenced Dontaye Deandre Singletary, 22, of the 500 block of Pennsylvania Street, to 65 years in prison.

Porter County Sheriff’s officers then took Singletary to Lake County to face murder charges in another case.

Bradford said that the impact that Singletary’s absence would have on his children was the only mitigator, but aggravators included victim Carl Griffith Sr., 72, being older than 65, and Singletary having a significant juvenile criminal history.

Bradford said Singletary could have faced the death penalty.

Griffith’s family would have preferred that.
