Just 3 months ago Bill Callaham had his jaw fractured in six places, a concussion, broken nose, lacerations to the face, and two teeth knocked out.
Callaham explained, “The jaw I have to work on every day to get my mouth open wide enough, I was wired shut for about 6 or 7 weeks.”
Mugged by three men while walking back to his hotel, the attorney returned to his home in Sacramento, Calif. with a steel plate in his jaw.
“When I heard about this, my heart just crushed,” said Mary Widmann, a close family friend.
But Friday night he returned to the Crescent City to celebrate and be among friends, family, and colleagues.
“So many people ask me, why would you go back? Are you afraid to go back? I say not at all, I love New Orleans. I had a bad incident. I don’t blame the city, I don’t blame New Orleans. I think it’s a wonderful city. I’m happy to be back” said Callaham.
On behalf of Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Callaham was given a proclamation by his lifelong friend Harry Widmann.
Widmann said, “He is a real trooper, after what he’s been through as one friend of mine said. He is obviously made of sterner stuff. He is one of the most resilient people I’ve ever met.”
Callaham says he hopes that some good will come from this horrific incident.
“It’s the awareness, its people understanding that maybe some things have to change and get some better protection for people,” explained Callaham.
A man who left New Orleans beaten and broken returns to show the love he has for the city.
