Unsuspecting drivers sitting at the stoplight near the intersection of Monroe Street and the I-45 feeder road in southeast Houston found themselves targeted by a man armed with rocks and pieces of concrete.
Houston police said Lamont Wright was throwing large rocks at drivers; two people were hurt and cars were damaged. Police arrested the 35-year-old, he’s now charged with assault and criminal mischief.
“They had a hard time getting him,” said Harold Cate, who witnessed the arrest. “He had already been tasered and he would not cooperate. They had to bring in backup.”
Cate was taking a class for his job not too far from the intersection where Wright had been. Cate said he was sitting on the steps having a cigarette when Wright just walked up.
“I could tell by the eye contact he was focused on me,” said Cate.
Cate said Wright had a softball-sized piece of concrete that he launched at him. Cate tried to get away.
“I just got up and run and went around the corner, that’s when I was hit with the concrete,” said Cate.
Cate was hit in the arm and treated at the scene for minor injuries. The police were called and they took Wright into custody.
Cate doesn’t know why Wright was so focused on him; he said the two don’t know each other.
“I could tell he was not coherent,” he said. “Nothing he said made any sense.”
HPD said the suspect would not comply with the officers on scene and as they approached Wright, he began to struggle and tried to kick the officers.
A motive is not known.
