Michael Derrick Hudson, a White genealogist who also writes poetry, is the most recent victim of blatant reverse racism. Though his poem “The Bees, the Flowers, Jesus, Ancient Tigers, Poseidon, Adam and Eve” ended up being placed in the 2015 edition of Best American Poetry, he submitted it under the nom de plume Yi-Fen Chou after being rejected publication on 40 different occasions when using his real, White-sounding name.
And get this: even after experiencing reverse racism, Hudson is still receiving blame, ostensibly for being a racist piece of crap or whatever. Exhibit one, via Washington Post:
“When you’re doing this from a position of entitlement, you’re appropriating an ethnic identity that’s one, imaginary, and two, doesn’t have access to the literary world,” poet and Chapman University professor Victoria Chang told The Washington Post. “And it diminishes categorically all of our accomplishments. He sort of implies that minorities are published because we’re minorities, not because of our work. That’s just insulting because it strips everything we’ve worked so hard for.”
Exhibit two:
“If someone is fraudulently pretending they’re someone else to benefit from a system that traditionally benefits them, that is not ethical,” she said. “I would have taken it out.”
Exhibit three, via NPR:
American literature isn’t just an art form — it’s a segregated labor market. In New York, where almost 70 percent of New Yorkers are people of color, all but 5 percent of writers reviewed in The New York Times are white. Hudson saw these crumbs and asked why they weren’t his. Rather than being a savvy opportunist, he’s another hysterical white man, envious of the few people of color who’ve breached their quarantine.
Remember: if you point out reverse racism, you’re automatically a racist. Because reverse racism doesn’t exist. Because Whites can’t be victims of racism. Only non-Whites can be victims of racism.
