A SCOT was killed in Brazil after trying to reason with a gunman during a robbery.
The 39-year-old translator was shot dead after two armed men burst into a bar in the upmarket Interlagos area, near the Formula 1 circuit in Sao Paolo.
One stood by the door acting as a lookout while his accomplice went round the bar taking customers’ personal belongings.
The lookout became agitated when some punters refused to co-operate and the victim – named locally as Jason Stevens – was gunned down after he tried to persuade the thug to lower his weapon.
Witnesses said Jason was shot several times in the stomach, leg and arms.
One theory is that the gunman felt threatened by the 6ft 2ins expat.
Bar owner Fumihiro Yoshima said: “I think the robber felt scared at how tall and strong he was.”
The criminals fled after the shooting at 11pm on Wednesday. Detectives were still hunting for them last night.
Jason was playing sinuca, a type of Brazilian snooker, at the time of the tragedy.
The gunmen fled in a black Ford Fiesta driven by a third man.
Jason is thought to have lived in Brazil for several years. He is said to have a school-age daughter.
A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We can confirm the death of a British national on October 22 in Brazil.
“We are offering consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.”
