Jonathan Penn was shot three times by the Latino, twice in the knee and once near the heart.

It began as a night out on the town in downtown Campbell that abruptly ended with gunfire. A 31-year-old man is recovering in the hospital after he and his girlfriend had a chance encounter with an armed robber earlier this month.

“I feel lucky,” said shooting victim Jonathan Penn. “I was lying there about to die.”

Back on August 3, Penn and his 22-year-old girlfriend were heading home after a night out in downtown Campbell when around 12:30 a.m. a robber randomly grabbed her in the First Bank parking lot across from the Pruneyard.

“He said give me all your money,” said Penn. “I was like what? Then I stand up and it’s like boom, boom.”

He thought he was the only one hit with gunfire, but he was wrong.

“After he shot me a couple times,” said Penn. “He thought that wasn’t enough so he tried to shoot her too.”

Campbell Police have yet to make an arrest.

While his girlfriend was injured, Penn got it worse.

Two bullets pierced his knee and one bullet narrowly missed his heart.

“I’m fortunate the bullet stopped at my spine,” said Penn.

Penn, who has now been in the hospital for a week and half, knows his road to recovery will be long. He said he’ll likely have to walk with a cane yet he’s comforted by all the support. The diving instructor received cards from his young students.

“It’s amazing people value who you are, as much as they do,” said Penn. “Who would have known.”

While he is grateful he survived, he can’t help but ask that one question he desperately wants the answer to, why?

“Who does that, what was he going to get?” said Penn. “$50 in cash? I just happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Campbell Police said this is a high priority case and the department is following up on several leads. So far, there are no arrests. The suspect is described as a Latino man in his twenties or thirties.

Penn’s girlfriend was treated and released. She is now recovering at home. As for Penn, he doesn’t know when he will be released from the hospital.
