A Ukip MEP says he was threatened at gunpoint by a migrant in a makeshift camp near Dunkirk.
Mike Hookem, the party’s defence spokesperson, has been visiting France to speak to hauliers and migrants in an attempt to highlight the effects the crisis in Calais.
He visited Dunkirk today as he had heard migrants were finding it too difficult at Calais, and were moving to smaller ports where there was less security.
He met with some migrants on the outskirts of the city, who he says were quite relaxed and invited him and his team into the camp to talk.
“Then a group approached from round a corner,” he said. “They were led by one man, who was shouting “f**k off, we don’t want you here.”
According to Mr Hookem, the man had a coat over his arm, which he pulled back to reveal a 9mm handgun.
The man, leading a group of around 15 migrants, kept shouting at them until they left the outskirts of the camp.
