Katharina Lawn was brutally killed by her Black neighbour.

Although Katharina Lawn likely already knew, her daughters on Friday headed to the cemetery to visit their mother, and tell her that the man who killed her nearly seven years ago was finally convicted.

A state Supreme Court jury Thursday afternoon found Darrell Boyd, 49, guilty in the brutal slaying of Lawn, his former neighbor, inside her apartment on April 20, 2007.

Lawn’s daughters – Tammy Pierson of Rochester and April Northern and Holly Stevens, who both live in Texas – said they were “extremely happy” to hear jurors convict Boyd of second-degree murder.

“It’s been seven years,” Northern said. “Unfortunately my mom wasn’t (in court) to speak, but everyone was able to speak for her. We’re grateful and feel like justice was served.”

Boyd, she said, won’t be on the streets or able to hurt anyone else.

Boyd fatally beat and strangled Lawn, 54, inside her apartment on Merchants Road and set furniture on fire in an effort to conceal the crime, according to Assistant District Attorney Brian Green. He argued that Boyd was angry at Lawn for calling the police on him two years earlier during a domestic dispute, which resulted in Boyd spending more than a year in prison.

“My mother was the most giving, caring, loving person I know,” Northern said. “Even if she knew the outcome, she wouldn’t have done anything differently. She was protecting her friend. That’s who she was.”

The sisters said it was difficult to wait years for the verdict, and closure.

Following more than a week of testimony. jurors deliberated over parts of three days before reaching the verdict Thursday afternoon.

Boyd faces 15 years to life to 25 years to life in prison at sentencing, which is scheduled for May 14 in front of Justice Alex R. Renzi, who also presided over the trial
