A British man has been killed in a hit-and-run while on holiday in the United States.

Andrew Hamilton, 27, from Chester, was fatally struck by a BMW that witnesses claim was travelling at speeds of 100mph in Miami Beach, Florida.

The driver of the car fled the scene of the collision and is now being hunted by police.

It is believed Mr Hamilton, who was on holiday in Miami with another British tourist, was using a pedestrian crossing on Collins Avenue when the incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday.

Friends have begun paying tribute to the airline cabin crew worker, with one describing him as ‘one of the nicest people you could meet’.

Mr Hamilton’s cousin, Jade Kilgallon, wrote on Facebook: ‘R.I.P to my cousin Andrew Hamilton who sadly passed away in a hit and run while on holiday in Miami yesterday.

‘Words can’t describe how much shock has hit us all but he will never be forgotten, shine bright with the rest of the Angels, love you so much.’

Donna Rhodes added: ‘Heaven has gained another angel , one of the nicest people you could meet. Andrew Hamilton you will be missed by many x so shocked.’

Writing on a JustGiving page where people have been asked to donate money in support of Mr Hamilton’s family, Natalie Fraser wrote: ‘This is awful news we are totally gutted he was a lovely man who was a dear friend to many.’

Another added: ‘You had such a kind heart and soul. I hope you dance amongst the stars mate.’

Local media said three female passengers in the silver BMW at the time of the collision were questioned for ten hours by Miami Beach Police.
