Why Not Just Allow the Soccer Team to Remain in the Cave?

I haven’t written about the Thai cave soccer team at all, because it just seems like a dumb story. Elon Musk is involved now. It’s all the headlines. I haven’t even read much of it, and the entire concept is weird to me – there wasn’t a cave in, there was a flood, and it just doesn’t really make sense why they can’t just be pulled out one at a time by divers.

Obviously, there’s some reason for that, or they would have just done that.

Oh no wait. That is exactly what they are doing right now. Two weeks later.

BBC:

Rescuers in Thailand have begun a hazardous operation to lead 12 boys and one adult out of a cave where they have been trapped for two weeks.

The group are stranded on a ledge 4km inside the Tham Luang cave but amid fears of rising waters, officials have decided they cannot wait any longer.

Officials have called it D-Day, saying the boys are fit and ready to move.

Late on Sunday, local reports said the first two members of the group had been brought out to safety.

It is unclear how long the whole mission will take.

The boys are being rescued in groups. Expert divers are guiding them out through darkness and submerged passageways towards the mouth of the cave.

What I don’t get is why the option of simply remaining in the cave forever was not presented.

I’m just thinking of, you know, Goonies.

And my own experiences caving.

The cave life could be quite enjoyable and fulfilling. And they could evolve into some new type of humanoid over a period of generations.

Ah, but there are no girls.

So they can’t breed.

I guess that’s why they’re not just sending them a message that it is their duty to produce a new cave-dwelling race of humanoids.

And to try to find the entrance to the hollow earth.
