Yes, We Can Feed Ourselves. Thank You Very Much.

So long as they dont build on it, Britain has more than enough farm land to enable self sufficiency in food.

When the subject of national self-determination is discussed and nationalists assert our belief in an independent Britain, free from domination by the EU and other international and globalist forces, an argument is always used stating categorically that we as a nation are incapable of feeding ourselves and therefore must submit to supra-national domination or else be starved into submission.

The statistic always quoted is that we only produce approximately 70% of our national food needs and the need to import the other 30% makes us dependent upon the goodwill of the international community. However in 1895, in Chapter IV of his book ‘Merrie England’, the influential patriotic socialist politician and writer Robert Blatchford quoted Lord Lauderdale at that time, stating that 500 acres of good farmland is capable of feeding 2,000 people, i.e. four people per acre, that with 50,000 acres of such land, the British Isles (including all of Ireland) could feed 200 thousand people.

Today, Britain no longer encompasses all of Ireland, but within the border of the UK we have 15.3 million acres of arable land alone, enough in Lord Lauderdale’s estimation to feed 61 million people on a diet of cereals, fruit and vegetables. This does not take into account the food produced by the dairy industry, the meat and livestock industry, nor the fisheries industry and this realisation alone blows this whole issue wide open.

It may be a fact that only 70% of our current food requirement here in Britain comes from British farms and that we import the remaining 30%, but the above statistics strongly suggest that this state of affairs is the product of commercial practice rather than physical necessity, and we must obviously export much of our food production to other countries simply in order to import exotic foodstuffs that are a matter of culinary choice rather than necessity.

Let us examine this matter in a little greater detail:

Within the UK we have 18.3 million hectares (45.2 million acres) of farmland, composed of 6.2 million hectares of arable land, 10.9 million hectares of pastureland and 1.2 million hectares of rough grazing, suitable only for sheep.

Britain has a million hectares of hill land suitable for sheep grazing.

For the purposes of this article, I will initially concentrate solely on the production of staple foodstuffs such as cereals and potatoes. I will ignore the production of oil seed rape, much of which is used for bio-fuel, fruit, legumes, sugar beet and other horticultural produce, meat, dairy, poultry and fish produce. The result of my deliberations should therefore not only carry with us most nationalists, but also any vegetarians or vegans who may read this article.

Of the 6.2 million hectares available for arable farming; 3.1 million hectares is devoted to cereal production; 233,000 hectares to peas and beans; 149,000 hectares to potatoes; and 116,000 hectares to sugar beet. Of the remaining 2.6 million hectares, 1.44 million hectares is used for oil seed rape production and the remainder for horticulture and fruit orchards and temporary pasture under crop rotation systems.

The average yield for cereal crops in the UK is 6,800 kilograms per hectare and this means that 3.1 million hectares will produce slightly over 21 million metric tonnes of cereal. Of this total 66% is currently used for animal feedstuffs, but let us suppose that it could all be made available to feed humans

After milling, 21 million tonnes of wheat grain translates into 17.2 million tonnes of wholemeal flour, and with a calorific value of 3,390 calories per kilogram of wholemeal flour, this has a total calorific value of 58.3 trillion calories, enough to meet the total calorific needs of 63.9 million people if it were possible to live healthily on flour alone.

The average yield for potatoes, is 40 tonnes per hectare and this means that 233,000 hectares will produce 5,960,000 metric tonnes of potatoes, and with a calorific value of 770 calories per kilogram, this has a total calorific value of 4.6 trillion calories, enough to meet the total calorific needs of 5 million people if it were possible to live healthily on potatoes alone.

As we can see from above, by simply maximising the use for human consumption of just the flour and potato produce of the UK alone, it would be possible to feed almost 69 million people. If we take into consideration, the meat and dairy produce of the UK, the production of eggs, fish, legumes, fruit etc. i.e. all of the foodstuffs needed to provide a balanced diet and the full range of nutritional needs, it is clear that we could easily provide a healthy balanced diet for the entire population of the UK from within our own borders.

It is a scurrilous myth therefore, this allegation that we British are unable to feed ourselves, and a myth that has been promulgated by those who desire global government and the subjugation of all peoples to a one world tyranny. A myth promulgated by those who seek to convince us that our well-being is dependent upon the goodwill of the EU and other globalist and supra-national entities. A myth that is easily exposed as untrue.

We nationalists can therefore look forward to a time when our people will have freedom and self-determination without fearing for the food security of our nation. We British were able to feed ourselves in the past and with the will and the right leadership we can do it again.
