Arab Civil War About to Go Hot as Qataris Buy Ships to Bust Out of Saudi Siege

Qatar decided to raise the stakes in an attempt to lift the Saudi siege of their country.

Qatar agreed on Wednesday to buy seven Italian warships at a cost of nearly $6 billion in the latest example of checkbook defiance by the gas-rich country in its two-month-old feud with four neighboring Arab countries.

The military deal between Qatar and Italy, announced by the foreign ministers of both countries in Doha, Qatar’s capital, was the latest in a slew of diplomatic and economic moves suggesting that the crisis, the worst to hit the Persian Gulf countries in decades, shows little sign of abating.

But where are my manners? Unless you watch Al-Jazeera on the regular, you may not know what this is all about. Let me tell you, this is some IRL Game of Thrones drama happening here.

Let me bring you up to speed.

Saudi Arabia has blockaded Qatar and has been trying to anaconda-style choke the country into submission.

Now I know what you’re thinking: why bother about these two dune coon countries squabbling?

I get where you’re coming from, but as long as the United States is the world policeman and every single American drives 2.5 cars on average for 4+ hours a day to commute to work from the suburbs because the nogs have made the cities uninhabitable, America is going to have an interest in that region. Which means we need to understand what’s going on and report on it.

Now, Qatar doesn’t actually have much oil. But they do have a lot of gas. There have been massive strides in liquified natural gas (LNG) technology in the last decade. These advances have made it much cheaper to ship liquefied gas all around the world in massive tankers. Qatar has benefited tremendously from this state of affairs.

But pipelines are still much cheaper than sending tankers. Qatar decided to get into some pipeline politics in 2012 when they started supporting and funding a rebellion against Assad. They wanted a regime in Damascus that would allow a pipeline to run through its territory.

If cheap Qatari gas was allowed to flow into Europe, that would undermine Europe’s number one natural gas supplier, Russia. The European elite, pressured by the Americans, were pushing for this Qatari pipeline as well. They wanted to weaken Russia’s position in Europe by relying on Arab energy instead.

They have a strained relationship to say the least.

Qatar was one of the main instigators of the failed coup d’etat against Bashar Assad. They supported groups like the Muslim Brotherhood (which had rebelled against Bashar’s father decades ago) and Al-Nusra in Syria, as well as the Free Syrian Army front groups.

What you may not know is that the Saudis and Qataris are competitors and sworn enemies. They both fund Islamic terror groups, but they fund rival groups that often fight one another. For example, after the Qatari-sponsored Egyptian Arab Spring coup put the Muslim Brotherhoood in power, the Saudis threw their support behind the generals who ousted the Qatari-backed Muslim Brotherhood.

Remember when Trump visited Mord… I mean Riyadh?

Ever see an aerial of Mecca by the way?

Put a giant fucking flaming eye on top of that and you have the tower of Barad-dur. Tolkien knew what was up.

From the Financial Times, back on June 6th:

Donald Trump has publicly swung behind Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations in their move to isolate Qatar for allegedly supporting terrorism, saying funding for “radical ideology” needed to be cut off. The US president’s public backing for the unprecedented Arab action came despite Qatar’s role as a long-time Washington ally, which hosts the main US military base for operations in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain cut diplomatic ties and their connections to Qatar’s airspace, airports and seaports on Monday. They accused Qatar of backing and financing terrorism in countries including Syria, Yemen and Libya.

Now, Saudi Arabia is also a sponsor of terror. In fact, they may be even worse than the Qataris, because they support ISIS and supported the Taliban and many other groups as well. But at least they don’t run Al-Jazeera (which shills for terrorists in Libya and Syria) and AJ+.

Typical semitic hypocrisy.

But it seems that Qatar is first on the chopping block. Will they do anything with those warships and all those other toys that the military industrial complex has been selling them?

We will have to see. My fingers are crossed though that these two Arab countries blow each other to smithereens.
