Isn’t it offensive to the blacks to say that monstrous orcs in fantasy worlds are actually symbols of black people?
If I was black and Wizards of the Coast was like “we know that you blacks are really the orcs, so we’re trying to help the orcs,” I would be offended by that.
A new set of errata rulings issued by Wizards of the Coast has officially removed the negative racial traits from Orcs and Kobolds in Dungeons & Dragons.
The removal of these racial traits was revealed on October 1st, when Wizards of the Coast released an update to their official rules FAQ, the Sage Advice Compendium, which included “links to new errata documents for Curse of Strahd, Ghosts of Saltmarsh, Storm King’s Thunder, Tomb of Annihilation, and Volo’s Guide to Monsters.”
In the errata document for Volo’s Guide to Monsters, Wizards of the Coast detailed changes to the text and rules surrounding the stat modifiers granted by the concepts of “Kobold traits” and “Orc traits.”
If orcs are black people, then who are kobolds supposed to be?
Mexicans?
Previously, Kobolds received a two-point increase to their dexterity in exchange for a reduction of their strength by the same amount.
Similarly, Orcs possessed a racial ability score bonus of two-points to their strength and one-point to their constitution at a cost of two intelligence points.
According to the errata, these negative modifiers have now been completely removed, which means both Kobolds and Orcs will now be allowed to receive their positive racial bonuses with no penalty to their ability scores.
Well, that is starting to resemble current racial realities then, isn’t it?
Wizards of the Coast has also replaced the Orc-specific ‘Menacing’ trait with a new “Primal Intuition” trait that will allow players to choose a “proficiency in two of the following skills of your choice: Animal Handling, Insight, Intimidation, Medicine, Nature, Perception, and Survival”.
The removal of negative racial modifiers is the latest decision made by Wizards of the Coast in order to make the game more palatable to mainstream audiences.
In June, Wizards of the Coast announced that “making D&D as welcoming and inclusive as possible has moved to the forefront of our priorities over the last six years” and detailed various changes they would be making to the tabletop RPG in order to achieve those goals.
The following July, the company moved to include ‘trigger warnings’ on their products as a means “to address a legacy of ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice in some old products.”
This is all just deranged, frankly.
Saying that “orcs are black people” is about on the same level as getting upset by the H&M “coolest monkey in the jungle” shirt.
If you say “it’s racist” then you’re admitting you think black people are like monkeys.
Saying you think black people are like orcs is actually more offensive, given that orcs are just totally savage monsters.
Probably, on some level, orcs do represent nonwhites in general. On some very abstract level.
But for Wizards of the Coast to acknowledge this is just completely unhinged and deranged. They are just coming out and saying, “actually, orcs are fantasy stand-ins for black people” and it is just impossible to understand why they would do that.
It basically ends up meaning that the entire universe of Dungeons & Dragons is a racist fantasy, first and foremost. They very easily could have said, “orcs are fantasy monsters not intended to correlate with modern race politics.” I’m not even exactly sure who was going around complaining about this, but whoever it was could have easily been ignored.
Instead, they’re making these major changes to the rules. Basically, the game is going to eventually become unplayable, because of weird politically correct changes to the rulebook.
Do they think black people are going to play this game? And not only black people, but radical Black Lives Matter supporting black people?
Thank God Baldur’s Gate III was on its way to being finished before all of this crap started happening. It is using the classic Forgotten Realms ruleset. Your orcs are still stupid and aggressive, your kobolds still vile imps.
It’s out in early access now, by the way.
I just bought it. It’s the first game I’ve ever bought in early access and I’m very excited to engage in some completely apolitical escapism.
