Are “healthy” foods poisoning you?
Arsenic has been found in fruit juices sold across the US, an alarming new report has found.
Tests by the non-profit research group Consumer Reports found dangerous levels of the metal – as well as lead, mercury and cadmium – in 21 of the 45 juices they tested.
Just half a cup of juice a day could drive up kids’ arsenic blood levels to dangerous heights, they warned.
What’s more, previous tests by Consumer Reports found arsenic and lead in a myriad of other infant baby foods, which could suggest that children may be exposed to metals in various ways on a regular basis.
The chemists who conducted the tests said the implications are serious.
‘Each of these metals has shown similar adverse effects on children’s developing brains and nervous systems, and there are potential additive effects,’ Consumer Reports chemist Tunde Akinleye explained.
It is not the first time Consumer Reports has investigated metals in fruit juice.
Their report in 2013, exposing high levels, prompted the FDA to officially explore new limits on lead and arsenic in juice.
The new report, published today, found lower levels across the board, but the chemists who conducted the investigation said the levels are still higher than they should be.
They found seven juices that could cause harm to children who drink more than four ounces a day:
Trader Joe’s Fresh Pressed Apple Juice, 100% Juice
365 Everyday Value (Whole Foods) Organic 100% Juice, Concord Grape
R.W. Knudsen Organic Just Concord Grape Juice
Welch’s 100% Grape Juice, Concord Grape
Welch’s 100% Grape Juice, With Grape
Great Value (Walmart) 100% Juice, Cranberry Grape
Welch’s 100% Juice with Antioxidant Superberry
Ignoring for a moment that those juices are loaded with arsenic… you shouldn’t drink fruit juice, poisoned or not. It’s been shown that consuming liquid calories doesn’t blunt our appetite, most likely due to a lack of fiber. People who drink fruit juice before meals end up consuming the same amount of calories in those meals that they’d have consumed if they hadn’t drink the juice before.
In other words: liquid calories are fattening. But it doesn’t even end there. Sugars in fruit juice enter the bloodstream very quickly. This can raise triglycerides, which can increase the risk of heart attacks, and forces the pancreas to release insulin faster than it normally would in order to keep up with all those sugars. It puts unnecessary strain on your body.
This doesn’t apply to real fresh juice and smoothies made from whole-foods due to fiber being present in those.
Fruit juices sound healthy but are not health-promoting. They’re dangerously close to sugar water.
Juicing fruit separates the nutritious part from the tasty part, ruining both. If you want to eat fruit, eat the whole package.
In fact, always try to eat the whole package, not only with fruits.
The modern obsession with over-processing foods and producing all these addictive extracts most definitely contributed to the current body shape of society.
Don’t let that be your shape.
