BBC:
Around 450 jobs will be cut from BBC News under plans to complete its £80m savings target by 2022.
Outlets to be hit by job closures include BBC Two’s Newsnight, BBC Radio 5 Live and the World Update programme on the World Service.
BBC News boss Fran Unsworth said there had to be a move away from traditional broadcasting and towards digital.
But broadcasting union Bectu said the changes mean staff will be “under even more pressure to deliver”.
The job cuts announced on Wednesday include the previously announced closure of BBC Two’s Victoria Derbyshire programme.
BBC News currently employs around 6,000 people, including 1,700 outside the UK. Its budget after the changes will be around £480m per year.
Unsworth, who is director of BBC News, said: “The BBC has to face up to the changing way audiences are using us.
“We need to reshape BBC News for the next decade in a way which saves substantial amounts of money. We are spending too much of our resources on traditional linear broadcasting and not enough on digital.”
It’s incredible that they are shutting down virtually all alternative media, but they can’t shut it down fast enough to keep their own audiences.
The media itself is the primary force in trying to get alternative media shut down. Alex Jones was literally hounded to death by CNN, who simply demanded outright that YouTube and Twitter ban him.
I was entirely crucified by the media. It was the media that called for all of my finances to be shut down, it was the media that called for all of my services to be pulled, it was the media who repeatedly got me banned from every single domain registrar in virtually every country on earth.
A journalist for New York Magazine actually wrote articles about how she was hunting down my remaining services and literally had someone translate Chinese to demand that I be banned from Chinese services.
And yes, that whale was Jewish, but I have been hounded by multiple journalists who were not Jewish. The media hired totally incompetent journalists specifically to hound me and try to get me banned from the internet.
If I’m honest, groups like the ADL and SPLC would rather have me online for their fundraising purposes. But the media is obsessed with shutting me down. And that is because I am a competitor. Right before Charlottesville, when the shutting down really went nuts, the Daily Stormer was competing with the top news sites in the world. We still have more traffic than a lot of major news sites.
But these news people’s campaigning against their competitor, as successful as it has been, hasn’t been enough to save themselves.
Of course, if they hadn’t been allowed to do what they did – say, if we had some kind of laws in this country protecting the freedom of speech – they would have virtually no readers/viewers at all.
