A man in his twenties who attacked a woman with a knife last weekend while yelling ‘Allahu Akbar’, has been arrested.
Following the attack which occurred at a police station in Saint-Denis, Reunion Island, an investigation for ‘voluntary violence and apology for terrorism’ was subsequently opened by a local prosecutor, France’s weekly news magazine Le Point reports.
According to reports from Agence France- Presse (AFP), the man attacked a young woman waiting in the lobby of the police station, putting a knife to her throat while shouting ‘Allahu Akbar.’ The man was then disarmed and taken into police custody, thankfully without causing harm to the innocent woman.
Saint-Denis Prosecutor Éric Tufféry has confirmed the attack.
The suspect is originally from Mayotte but has lived in Reunion for several years now. Prior to this incident, he was known to the police, according to a source close to the case.
