You have to wonder what the hell NATO was thinking when they allowed Turkey to join.
Well, you don’t really have to wonder – “what they were thinking” is self-explanatory. But it was a really bad decision.
Turkey is a big enough country, with enough links to major third parties, that the West can’t really dominate it through “integration,” and thus thinking it could be a “reliable NATO member” (bribed client state) was absurd.
RT:
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has branded a recent joint photo of Vladimir Putin with Recep Tayyip Erdogan a challenge to NATO. The image was shot during a meeting between the Russian and Turkish leaders in Iran.
The photo features the three presidents, with host Ebrahim Raisi in the middle, holding hands and smiling. In an interview with Bild published on Saturday, Baerbock noted that this picture is “more than incomprehensible” for her, “especially from the point of view of a NATO member.”
While being part of the alliance, Turkey has deviated from other member states in choosing a neutral stance in the Ukraine conflict. NATO as a whole officially considers Russia a threat.
“The fact that the Turkish president is in this photo is a challenge, to put it mildly,” she said.
In her opinion, the photo proves the importance of standing together “with value partners” who “not only believe in the international rules, but stand up for them.”
“Because there are other actors who do not stand up for our values, and when in doubt they also join forces,” she explained.
The trilateral negotiations in the Iranian capital were held earlier this week as part of the so-called Astana Peace Process, which was launched by Moscow, Tehran and Ankara in 2017 with the aim of achieving a peaceful settlement to the conflict in Syria. Putin also held bilateral talks with each of his counterparts. The situation in Ukraine was on the agenda of both meetings.
I can’t believe they are still saying “our values.”
That is really “diversity is our greatest strength” tier. You notice that they cut out some of these slogans when they get mocked so much that they can’t say them with a straight face anymore.
Who knows what kind of deal Russia has made with Erdogan, but it is clear that Turkey is not really on the side of NATO. Erdogan is extremely skilled at playing all sides. He’s probably the single most competent leader, in terms of geopolitics, on the planet.
In terms of domestic politics, I don’t really know. He’s done the obvious thing and appealed to ultra-religious peasants and people who hate the Kurds. He’s not maintained the economy, and he’s flooded the country with refugees.
Right now, he’s being challenged by Umit Ozdag, a Donald Trump type figure who is hilarious and posts Wojak memes saying he’s going to send the Arabs and Afghans back in a catapult. This video gives a pretty good summary.
Turkey currently has 80% inflation, and people really don’t like these immigrants. So although we mostly think of Erdogan as a figure on the international stage, it is important to remember that he is the leader of a country with a bunch of people living in it and while he’s been doing all of these genius moves on the world stage, he’s facing an uprising at home.
Ozdag is probably actually working for Erdogan. I don’t really see any other reason why he wouldn’t have been arrested yet. He’s not the leader of the opposition, he’s formed a third party which is getting extreme popular support, but really just means that the election will be spoiled and Erdogan will maintain power despite 10% of the country being foreign crime gangs and 80% inflation. Erdogan will then probably make some capitulation to him regarding the immigrant crisis and start catapulting the immigrants into Greece.
