Nowadays, the West doesn’t invade your country by sending in the tanks. It sends in the tattoo parlors.
Because “democracy and human rights” is a codeword for “anal sex and tattoos.”
It’s the permanent mark of protest.
Demonstrators taking to the streets of Hong Kong in record numbers are also finding a hip way to visualize their dissent — with protest tattoos.
Artists in the city say they have been inundated with requests for ink that includes symbols of outrage, including gas masks, goggles, flags and umbrellas, according to the South China Morning Post.
One popular design manipulates the Chinese characters for “Hong Kong” — which when viewed from the side spell “ga yau,” or “add oil,” a phrase used by protesters to express encouragement.
Graphic designer Kyo Chen, who came up with the protest image, said he was “shocked and moved” to see it becoming permanent on people’s bodies.
Ah yes. You just know that a country is progressing when its young people are getting into tattoos.
Tattooist Zada Lam added to the paper that he has tattooed his own art of an umbrella on “70 to 80” people for free, filling his Instagram feed with photos.
“When I look at it, I feel pride and solidarity,” said one of his clients, calling herself Weeze, who has the design on the top of her right arm.
Defacing yourself with inane tattoos is very short-sighted and silly.
Most people who have tattoos regret getting them and are the biggest proponents for research into new laser tattoo removal technology.
If there is any silver lining to this story, it is that the Chinese government may use these distinct tattoos to hunt these protesters down and then permanently hot-glue dunce caps to their foreheads like they did during the Cultural Revolution.
A modern version of this punishment might be to simply brand these idiots with ugly tattoos in highly visible places.
They could stamp “baka!” on all of these idiots’ foreheads as punishment.
However, as these recent protests have shown, the Chinese government is a lot softer than we’ve been led to believe. There has been no crackdown to speak of, and the whole thing continues to spiral out of control. Gone are the old Communist firebrands from the glorious civil war days.
Now, the Chinese Communist Party is an organization filled with businessmen and bureaucrats, not warlords like the country’s leaders used to be.
Communist countries have always exhibited a hidden weakness (and longing) for the trappings of the officially forbidden bourgeois lifestyle.
China is rich now.
And that means they don’t want to rock the boat and lose out on making heaps and heaps of cash like they’re doing now by cracking down and then hunkering down to weather the wrath that they expect the US to unleash on them in retaliation.
They need to make a decision though.
Every hour that they wait, another Chinese chick gets a dumb umbrella inked into her shoulder, ruining her forever…
If I were the leader of a country, that sort of thought would hang heavy on my conscience, indeed.
