The president of the Conference of European Rabbis, Pinchas Goldschmidt, called upon Spain to ask for forgiveness from the Jewish people for their expulsion in 1492 instead of trying to attract Israelis with the offer to give the (Spanish) nationality to all those who can prove their Sephardic origin.
In an op-ed published in the online paper “Ynet”, Goldschmidt also demanded that all those who were forced to convert should be given the opportunity to look in historical archives in order to find their Jewish ancestry.
The author, who is also the great rabbi of Moscow, “In some places like Mallorca, the descendants of the (Jewish converts) still constitute a differentiated group called , and they live in an environment which, according to a 2008 poll by Pew Global Attitudes, is contrary to Jews”.
In line with this argument, Goldschmidt emphasized that “those descending from Jews who were forced to convert must be given the right to discover their links with their ancestors the same way as many children who were hiding in monasteries during the holocaust and those Jews forced to assimilate in the USSR were also given”.
“And I also believe that the Jewish people deserve at last an apology. The Spanish government did not apologize to Jews so far. The king missed a great opportunity (to do so) during his visit to a synagogue in 1992”, he also added.
“Even the Portuguese government apologized some years ago”, he added as comparison. He sees the gesture of Spain of giving the citizenship to those who can prove their Sephardic ancestry as “having com a bit late, but nevertheless worthy of praise”.
Goldschmidt suggested that the Spanish government should create a genealogic institute to help Jews to find their Spanish roots and to introduce Jewish studies into the school agenda.
And he also asked for old synagogues being now used as museums and churches to be assigned again to Jewish prayers in order to “amend historical mistakes”.
“the point is not the restitution of property, which is something Spanish authorities could be scared of, the same way as Turkish authorities are scared of having to acknowledge the Armenian genocide. The point is mainly that of historical and moral justice”, he added.
