Maybe the Real Free Speech on the Internet was the Friends We Made Along the Way?

The prevailing internet wisdom is that Americans on the internet are dumber than Europeans. You see this everywhere.

I just want to say one thing:

Europeans are NOT smarter than Americans, British and Australians. The only reason that it looks that way is that European posters are already controlled for high intelligence, being people who are fluent in English and comfortable enough in this second language to be posting online in that language.

When you add in “having the keenness to engage foreigners on a foreign language site about primarily foreign matters,” you’ve automatically reduced the “average” European poster to a member of the top 5% of their respective countries.

Meanwhile, all of our people are posting in their first language, so there is no control whatsoever on intelligence, beyond the ability to read and type in their first language about issues which are happening in their own countries.

If you went on a German, French or Russian language forum, the average quality of posts would be the same as that of the average American, British or Australian poster.

European posters are using the fact that they are typing in OUR LANGUAGE to trope-canard us as stupid.

And I’m not going to stand for it any longer.
