A pair of socialites traveling from Miami’s exclusive Fisher Island to the mainland died when their Mercedes-Benz rolled off the car ferry and into the water in a freak tragedy, authorities said.
Viviane Brahms, 75, of Harrison in Westchester County, and driver Emma Afra, 63, who lived in the tony enclave, were found unresponsive inside the blue vehicle submerged in the channel, The Miami-Dade Police Department said in a Wednesday statement.
The ferry operator told police that the vehicle fell overboard around 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Hours later, around 9:30 p.m., local fire rescue scanners reported the current was so strong that crews decided to “abandon trying to float the vehicle” until 10:30 p.m., according to the Miami Herald.
After an exhaustive search, authorities recovered the vehicle with both women unresponsive inside.
The police department is conducting the death investigation, and the US Coast Guard is probing how the car fell overboard, according to police.
Afra was busted by Miami-Dade police for DUI in March 2018, a department spokesman confirmed, though further details about the incident weren’t immediately available.
A photo obtained by Local 10 News shows an empty space and a barrier that appears to be crushed at the front of a boat named Pelican.
Witness Robert Berg, who was captaining Jillybird Fishing Charters, told the Herald that the ferry was open at both the front and the back, blocked off by only a chain to keep cars and people on board.
