So long, Nick.
So long, Nick.

Nick Griffin, saying the decision was all his own, has stepped down from his position as the leader of the BNP.

It’s a little bit sad, I think. But the sad reality is, he was not capable of really inspiring people, and tended to upset people instead.

I also think he’s been going through some personal stuff. He went bankrupt earlier this year.

Hopefully, this marks a change of course for the BNP, which hasn’t been doing well as of late.

BBC:

Mr Griffin, who has been leader since 1999, said he had had “more than long enough” in charge and had seen off both external and internal attempts to “destroy” the party in recent years.

While May’s European election results had been “brutally hard”, he said the party was capable of “winning” again.

Mr Griffin has been replaced as acting chairman by Adam Walker

The 55-year old, who will take the new role of party president, lost his seat in the European Parliament in May.

The party has suffered a string of electoral setbacks in recent years, getting just over 1% of the vote in May’s European elections and losing the majority of its local council seats in England.

In a statement on the party’s website, Mr Griffin said he had stepped down voluntarily at a meeting of the party’s national executive committee on Saturday.

“The decision was mine and mine alone, though it involved a lengthy and constructive discussion between the entire collective leadership,” he wrote.

He suggested the party was in a more stable financial and political position than it had been for some time.

“I had initially hoped to hand the responsibility over several years ago, but when a concerted effort was made to destroy the BNP from both outside and within, I decided that it was my duty to stay and steer our movement through the storm,” he said.

“The leadership team is united as to the way ahead and, once again, the BNP – for all that there are many improvements to be made – is the only effectively functioning, genuine nationalist game in town.”

I don’t know anything about Walker (I imagine some commenters do), but politics.co.uk makes him sound like a pretty cool guy:

Walker received a suspended sentence and a driving ban last year after chasing down three boys aged between ten and twelve in his car, before slashing their bike tyres with a knife.

His initial two-year ban from teaching was extended to a lifetime ban by former education secretary Michael Gove.

Walker’s appointment marks the end of any attempts by the BNP to pose as a non-racist party.

He has previously described Britain as a “multicultural shithole” which is under the process of “ethnic cleansing” and warned that the country faces many more Lee Rigby-style executions perpetrated by “tribal African” people.

A spokesperson today confirmed that Walker was the new leader of the party.

“Recently appointed deputy chairman, Adam Walker, has accepted the role of acting chairman of the British National Party after Nick Griffin stepped aside at a meeting of the BNP National Executive held on 19th July, 2014,” a party spokesperson said.

“The full National Executive are united in their support for Adam in this role.”

So long and thanks for everything, Nick.
