“It seemed like someone had seated himself full body into the car like a massive imprint,” Amy Robinson said.

No one was arrested when police dispersed a large group of teens—what some residents called a “wilding”—Monday night in Uptown.

It started out as a peaceful birthday gathering in the Field House at Chase Park. However, after it ended around 10 p.m. Monday night, the sweet sixteen party quickly soured and the party goers turned into a frightening group of vandals as they stormed down Leland.

Video of the incident was captured by a resident on Leland. It shows some of the teens walking down the middle of the street, but it’s what the video did not capture that has residents in the neighborhood angry.

“I looked outside and just like a storm of kids were running down and started running up on cars and banging windows,” said vandalism victim Magen Rooney.

Rooney’s car was one of many that were damaged. The hood was crumpled in and the roof also stomped on.

“I looked outside and just like a storm of kids were running down and started running up on cars and banging windows,” said vandalism victim Magen Rooney.

“I figured they came, ran, jumped, because you see there’s footprints all the way back,” Rooney added.

Another victim said the hood of her new car was smashed in. Fortunately, she said a body shop was able to pop the worst of it out.

“It seemed like someone had seated himself full body into the car like a massive imprint,” Amy Robinson said.

The Chicago Park District confirmed employees did supervise a party held in a room at the Chase Park Field House. About 40 teens were there with 10 adults as chaperones.
Once again, there were no problems at the party, but when the teens left they caused mayhem as they headed down Leland reportedly videotaping one another busting windows and damaging cars. The vandals even reportedly banged on one moving vehicle and grabbed the driver after opening the door.

The girl who had the party was Shonette Sanders’ God-sister. Sanders said she left before the trouble started.

“I feel like very bad for the people that had to go through their cars getting stepped on and busted windows out and everything. I just feel very, very bad for that,” Sanders said.

The damage caused is similar to that which can happen when driving through a safari park full of wild animals, only these cars were stationary.

But that’s little consolation for the victims.

“I teach in CPS, it’s just hard watching kids not be on the right path. And like the role models are standing there watching,” Rooney said.

By that, she’s referring to the chaperoning parents who apparently did nothing to stop or discourage the vandalism. Police did respond to 911 calls about the disturbances, but there have been no arrests.

“I am working with the police and community members to find out more on what happened last night on Leland,” a statement on Ald. James Cappleman’s website read.

“I want to thank the neighbors that called 911 immediately to alert the police. Anyone with property damage please contact the police immediately,” the site added.

Cappleman said he requested more police to be in the area Tuesday night in case of another incident, and advises residents to call 911 to report anything suspicious.
