I didn’t report the story when it broke yesterday because I was tired. But basically, according to NBC News, some former government officials were doing backchannel negotiations with Russians, and actually met with Lavrov.
Russia has totally denied that this was happening, so it could be a planted story for some reason. I don’t know what purpose it would serve – I’m sure you could think one up – but Richard Haass would for sure be involved in some dirty ass shit.

I do not think Richard Haass is a tankie. This is how these people think. They are like babies.
He was reacting to a NBC News report based entirely on anonymous sources which claimed that a group of former US national security officials have been conducting “track two” talks with “prominent Russians believed to be close to the Kremlin” for the past several months.
It’s not anonymous sources anymore. Haass admitted it on Substack.
The administration of US President Joe Biden found issues with the NBC story, disavowing any role in the alleged talks. Washington “did not sanction those discussions,” a State Department spokesman said in a statement on Thursday.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told CBS News that, while the White House was aware of the unofficial contacts, “I want to make it clear that these discussions were not encouraged or engendered by us and we were not supporting them in any active way.”

Russia has long said it has nothing to negotiate with the Ukrainian leadership, and will only deal with those in the West who are pulling its strings. The US has said that it will never discuss Ukraine without the direct involvement of Ukrainians. Kiev, meanwhile, insists that the only framework for ending the conflict is President Vladimir Zelensky’s “peace formula,” which would amount to Russian capitulation and has been rejected by Moscow as delusional.

What the US would be discussing with the Ukraine is their own support for the Ukraine. That is the issue here. This is a proxy war. The Ukraine would not be fighting without US support – they would not have any weapons or money, let alone an army of mercenaries doing the tough shit.
There is literally no discussion to be had with the Ukraine. Russia already did that, and Zelensky publicly said he would meet all their demands. Then Boris Johnson flew into Kiev and told him he had to fight until everyone in his country was dead.

So:
- The US is the driver of the war, and
- The Ukraine already agreed to peace and the US interrupted the deal and told Zelensky he was not allowed to do peace
This narrative about “no talks without the Ukraine” is the most obviously retarded nonsense. The Ukraine is literally banned from talking, because it is a puppet state run by a professional actor. So the US is able to continue saying “oh well, we can’t do anything, it’s the Ukraine’s choice” while also telling the Ukraine they don’t have a choice.
Eventually, when they have to do talks, they will say “oh well, we want to keep fighting, but the Ukraine has lost more than half their population, and basically everything is totally destroyed, and Russia is occupying a third of their country, and I guess they want to stop fighting and have peace.”
