At least five people have been killed after a volcano on a small New Zealand island frequented by tourists erupted Monday, creating dangerous conditions that prevented rescuers from accessing the island.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said about 100 tourists were on or near White Island when it erupted in the afternoon. It was unclear how many people remained on the island after the eruption.
Police said fewer than 50 people were on White Island at the time. Both New Zealand and overseas tourists were among the injured. Royal Caribbean said guests from its cruise ship Ovation of the Seas had been visiting the island.
“Some of those, at this stage, are unaccounted for,” she said. ‘”A number of people are reportedly injured and are being transported to shore.”
She said the incident appeared to be “very significant.”

St John medical center said it had dispatched seven helicopters to the island with paramedics aboard.
Brad Scott, a volcanologist with GNS Science, said the eruption was significant and had sent a plume of steam and ash about 12,000 feet into the air. He said it had also affected the whole of the White Island crater floor.
Imagine if after the Charleston shooting by Dylann Roof, when Nikki Haley (nee Nimrata Randhawa) was out there whining about it, she dressed up in a weave, and told all her underlings to get and wear weaves.
