The UN has declined to support accusations by Kiev and Washington that Russia’s actions during its military offensive in Ukraine have amounted to genocide.
Ravina Shamdasani, the spokesperson for UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), was addressed on the issue by journalists on Friday.
“No, we have not documented patterns that could amount to [genocide],” she responded.
Shamdasani pointed out there were “a lot of these legal qualifications – crimes against humanity and genocide – at the end of the day would be for a court of law to determine.”
According to the UN’s own definition, ‘genocide’ includes “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Moscow of “genocide” after the events in the Kiev suburb of Bucha, where numerous bodies with signs of execution were discovered on April 1, shortly after the withdrawal of Russian troops from the area.
Russia, which insists that it doesn’t target civilian populations in Ukraine and only hits military targets, has rejected the claim and in turn has blamed Kiev of organizing a staged provocation in order to smear its forces.
However, US President Joe Biden has decided to follow Zelensky’s lead and has also accused Moscow of “genocide,” and of “trying to wipe out the idea of even being Ukrainian.”
They’re claiming it is a literal violent genocide – mass murdering people based on their ethnic group – like the Armenian genocide. This is just goofball comedy, like Caddyshack.
We have the civilian death numbers. Even the numbers from the Ukraine are not “genocide.” Even if Bucha really happened, like a few soldiers lost their shit like that scene in Platoon (and various other Vietnam movies), that would not be a “genocide.”
Soldiers flying off the handle due to the pressure of war and shooting civilians is a tragedy, but calling it a genocide is like calling a school shooting a genocide.
The word has a definition.
However, the claim of “wiping out the Ukrainian identity” is at least something you can talk about.
Notably, “Ukrainian identity” is not a real thing. Zelensky’s top advisor Alex Arestovich admitted this, saying the entire concept of a “Ukrainian nation” is built on lies.

However – Russia is not even trying to conquer Kiev. They are certainly not planning some long-term occupation of any part of the Ukraine. They are taking back their own territory (it’s really all their territory, but they’re not taking it all). The Ukraine will continue to exist, and Zelensky might remain as leader if the people of the country are okay with what he’s done to them (I don’t think they will be, when they realize that he forced them to completely destroy their country for the purpose of joining NATO, which doesn’t have any affect on the Ukrainian people).
So though “destroying the idea of what it means to be Ukrainian” – which would mean conquering the country and forcing people to speak Russian (like the Ukraine was doing to Russians in the east) – is at least comprehensible, it is also obviously not happening, and no one can claim it is happening.
Russia is doing what she said she was going to: she is destroying the military so they can force a neutrality pact, and taking the Donbass. That was what they said they were going to do.
This atrocity nonsense is just total desperation – they are staging hoaxes and then whining, because the narrative of “Ukraine is winning” is so retarded that normal people were like “wait a second here…”
This is less serious than when Black Lives Matter said 19 unarmed blacks being killed by cops in a year was a genocide.
