America Confused About Whether to Quarantine Wuhan Evacuees

He’s fine – just let him in. This is America AKA Freedom World and we don’t do quarantines.

I just can’t even begin to imagine how this could possibly be a topic of discussion.

Bringing them out of China was totally insane.

Now we’re wondering whether we should quarantine them?

CNN:

An airliner from Wuhan, China, is expected to land in Ontario, California, on Wednesday, filled with US citizens who could possibly be infected with the deadly Wuhan coronavirus.

There are about 240 passengers on board, flying in from the very epicenter of the outbreak. The Wuhan coronavirus has killed 100 people in China. It has infected more than 2,700 people in Hubei province, where Wuhan is located, and the virus has spread to more than a dozen countries.

When the plane arrives, health officials face tough questions: Even if passengers are healthy, should they be quarantined in Ontario, away from the general public to make sure they’re not carrying the virus? And for how long?

“I bet this is under intense discussion,” said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist and a longtime adviser to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Chinese health officials have said people can spread the virus before they’re showing symptoms — but US health officials say they’re not sure that’s true.

That makes the choice about what to do with the returning Americans that much harder. Among the passengers are about three dozen US diplomats and their families.

“These are not easy decisions,” said Dr. Peter Hotez, an infectious disease specialist and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.

It is in fact the easiest and most straightforward decision anyone could be asked to make.

What is even the risk of quarantining them?

That they’ll be inconvenienced for two weeks?

We’re trying to weigh that against a plague?

At a press briefing Tuesday morning in Washington, US Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar was vague about plans for the passengers.

“We’ll take whatever the appropriate evidence-based public health measures are with them, as we would in any other situation,” he said.

A San Bernardino County, California, official said Tuesday those traveling on the charter flight from Wuhan may have to stay isolation between three days and two weeks.

Curt Hagman, chairman of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, said there’s no indication any of the travelers have the virus, but authorities are setting up beds, phones chargers and televisions in an isolated, dormant hangar.

They have no idea how long people might be staying, but they’re preparing for them to watch Sunday’s Super Bowl in the hangar.

“They’re going to be isolated from the plane. They’re not going to the public areas of the airport. They’re not going to be exposed to the general public until CDC clears them to go on their way,” Hagman said.

A spokesman for the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services declined to comment on the plans.

So, I guess they’re at least considering quarantining them?

I suppose it is a moot point since we’re still allowing planes to fly in from China.

Seriously: we still have passenger jets flying directly from China to the US.

Hong Kong has closed its border, but the US is still allowing flights in directly from China.

Apparently some of them are coming from Wuhan!

To San Francisco!

As I have said, we don’t know if this is actually going to be a major plague.

We don’t even know if anyone other than Asians can be infected with it – because the media won’t tell us the races of the people who have been infected.

However, it obviously should have been dealt with as if it was going to become a plague – but instead, the US and other governments just simply allowed flights to come in directly from China for weeks, and now they’re debating on whether or not to quarantine people they have reason to believe may have been exposed.

This is absolute lunacy. Just imagine if it was actually a serious plague – we would all be totally doomed.

Because why?

Because the government couldn’t act? Because they think it is mean or perhaps politically incorrect to quarantine people?

How is this real life?

Tucker Carlson had Senator Tom Cotton on his show Tuesday night, and Cotton said that we should stop flights from China – then he said “except to evacuate Americans”!

Why “except to evacuate Americans”???

If someone is exposed to an infectious disease, if they are behind the quarantine, they should remain quarantined! I’m sure it’s sad for them – okay, that’s too bad!

If you want to fly people out, then they need to be quarantined. Also, anyone who is exposed to them needs to be quarantined – including flight attendants, etc.

But I guess this just isn’t how the greatest democracy in the entire universe does things. Instead, they sloppily let plagues spread as they publish confused articles about how maybe they shouldn’t do that.
