Polk County authorities are searching for a man they say fatally hit a bicyclist Monday morning in Haines City before fleeing.
Darrell Lavel Coleman, Jr., 26, killed Charles Hudson, Jr., 66, as the older man cycled on the shoulder of Kokomo Road, according to Polk County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carrie Horstman. Coleman later ditched his vehicle near Detour Road, she said.
The Lake Hamilton Police Department picked Coleman up June 30 on drug-possession charges, according to a news release and court records. He was released the next day after posting bail, records show.Hudson was a resident of Solivita, a Poinciana retirement community, and volunteered with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Citizen’s Assisted Patrol. In April, the Sheriff’s Office honored him for devoting 345 hours to the program in 2016.
