Police have arrested Oren Joseph Lewis on a capital murder charge in the death of his 23-month-old daughter.

Lewis, 31, a former Hancock County coach who played football for Louisiana Tech for several years, is accused in the death in August of his daughter, Maleah.

The girl died after Lewis reportedly told police she had fallen from a bed while she was asleep. The child, the daughter of Lewis’ former girlfriend, died at a New Orleans hospital.

Police arrested Lewis on Monday morning. The underlying charge for capital murder is felony child abuse.

Police Chief David Allen said Lewis was questioned and taken to Hancock County jail. His bond is set at $1 million.
