Keylon Alexander Barret has jumped bail for 10 other offences.

A man who is accused of shooting and raping a 17-year-old woman earlier this year appeared before a judge Tuesday morning.

Keylon Alexander Barrett, 18, was extradited from Polk County to Lee County. He faces second-degree attempted murder and sexual assault charges.

Fort Myers police say the incident happened during the early hours of September 8, 2013.

The victim told investigators she was returning home from a store on Royal Palm Avenue when she was approached by man who she knew only as “Max.”

She said the man forced her into a large field in the area of Katherine Street and Jackson Street where he demanded sex from her.

The victim said the man beat her during the incident and pointed a gun at her head — forcing her to comply.

According to reports, the man shot her in the neck and forced her to leave her phone at the scene. The suspect then fled on foot.

Just after 5 a.m., Rogers Smith and his friend Trey were driving down Jackson Street in Fort Myers when the victim — covered in blood, scratches and wearing ripped clothes — ran up to their car.

“She was bleeding, just like she had been through a lot, she had scratches — it was bad,” said Smith.

At first, the two were nervous and tried to get away but the injured victim managed to hold on to their car and jump in.

“She just kept screaming louder and louder, and we got to the hospital and she just jumped out and Rogers walked her in,” explained Trey.

Investigators further learned the bullet grazed her face and continued in a downward angle before lodging in her chest. The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators then spoke to Barret who agreed to provide a DNA sample.

The victim was able to identify Barret as her attacker and DNA taken from the scene matched Barret’s, according to reports.

During the investigation, police found outstanding warrants out of Polk County. He was taken there and later extradited to Lee County for the current charges.

At his court appearance Tuesday, a judge set his bond at $250,000 for each count. The state said it believes he’s a flight risk, citing his extensive criminal history and failure to appear on previous charges.
