A large-scale power crunch could seriously jeopardize the German industrial sector as the country’s producers of car parts, chemicals and steel struggle with energy prices that are hitting new highs almost every day, Bloomberg reported on Friday.
“Energy inflation is way more dramatic here than elsewhere,” said Ralf Stoffels, chief executive officer of BIW Isolierstoffe, a maker of silicone parts for the auto, aerospace and appliance industries. “I fear a gradual deindustrialization of the German economy,” he added, as quoted by the agency.
Prices for gas and electricity in Germany have reportedly more than doubled in the past two months.
Earlier this week, the European benchmark power price hit a record high of more than €500 ($509) per megawatt hour, marking an increase of over 500% in the past year.
On Friday, European natural gas futures were trading at around €242 per megawatt-hour on the TTF exchange, which is ten times higher than in August 2021.
“Prices are placing a heavy burden on many energy-intensive companies competing internationally,” said Matthias Ruch, a spokesman for the world’s second-largest chemical producer, Evonik Industries, as quoted by Bloomberg.
Conservative war supporters on Fox News are still claiming that energy prices are purely the result of Joe Biden’s energy policies and have no relationship to the war against Russia.

They probably know that Joe Biden is not the president of Germany. They just aren’t aware that Germany is facing deindustrialization due to energy prices resulting from the war on Russia, because Fox News doesn’t report that and Americans are typically oblivious to anything going on in the rest of the world.
I understand that “Putin’s price hike” angered conservatives. It definitely isn’t Putin’s price hike, it is Joe Biden’s price hike. Because Joe Biden is the one who started this war with Russia.
But conservatives back Joe Biden doing a war against Russia, because of our child tranny values in a democracy of rules-based anus.
To be clear: Joe Biden’s energy policies haven’t helped. I’m not saying that they have no effect. But the spike that happened as a result of the war on Russia happened as a result of the war on Russia.
Of course, you could in theory have a war on Russia and low energy prices if you just drilled American oil. But you’d also have to cut yourself off from global pricing, which is impossible. Furthermore, it would take several years to up the American refining capacity.
Basically, the Ukraine conflict is going to have to end when it gets cold. There is no way all of Europe is going to tolerate freezing with old people dying and everything else. It’s possible that Germany will just try to re-normalize relations with Russia and open the gas back up.
