Chicago: Colored Driver Crashes Into Uber Car, White Woman Dies in Flaming Wreckage

A 23-year-old Homer Glen man faces charges of driving under the influence and reckless homicide, among others, after he reportedly left the scene of a fatal crash involving an Uber ride-share vehicle over the weekend in Chicago.

A young Bolingbrook woman was also seriously injured in the incident, state police have said.

Rami Matariyeh was reportedly driving an Infiniti sedan about 3:20 a.m. Sunday south on the Stevenson Expressway, Interstate 55, when he rear-ended a Hyundai sedan at Damen Avenue, according to a news release from Illinois State Police.

The Hyundai, which was operating as an Uber ride-share vehicle at the time, then caught fire, according to the release. The 47-year-old Uber driver, a man from Schaumburg; 22-year-old Berwyn woman; and 23-year-old Lyons man were removed from the vehicle, but Jamie A. Poulos, 23, of Berwyn could not be extricated and died from her injuries.

Matariyeh reportedly fled the scene of the crash but was later apprehended at his home, police said in a news release. He was then transported to an area hospital for injuries he suffered in the incident.

On Tuesday, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Matariyeh with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, leaving the scene of a crash causing great bodily harm, aggravated DUI involving a death, aggravated DUI causing great bodily harm and reckless homicide, the release said.
