The Chinese Air Force will circle Taiwan with fighter jets if necessary to “safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” a spokesman said on Sunday. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is heading to the region, but it is not yet clear if she will go ahead with a controversial visit to Taiwan, which Beijing firmly opposes.
Speaking at a military airshow on Sunday, Air force spokesman Shen Jinke said that China has many kinds of aircraft capable of circling “this precious island of our motherland.”
China’s Air Force “has the firm will, full confidence, and sufficient capability to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Shen added, according to a Reuters report citing Chinese state media.
Shen’s statement came as US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi departed for Asia, announcing on Sunday that she would stop in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan for “high-level meetings.” Pelosi had planned on visiting Taiwan during this trip, but stopped short of confirming or denying whether she would go through with this plan in recent days.

Should Pelosi go through with her visit, she would be the first speaker of the House of Representatives to do so since Newt Gingrich made the trip in 1997.

This Pelosi escalation thing needs more words written about it. But I was compelled to write a 6,500-word piece about a cinematic dream I had today. There isn’t really much new going on here – it’s the same thing I’ve been saying for years now, and what I’ve especially been saying since the Ukraine thing began.
The situation is very straightforward for anyone who’s paying attention.
Please note: I don’t expect open war with China to pop off this week, regardless of which way the US goes on this Pelosi thing.
I suspect the US will back down on Pelosi, and this will just be a flare-up rather than a trigger.
But the situation keeps on escalating. That’s the point. It gets worse. And you saw that with Russia, the US escalated it to open war.
The thing here is: China is being more bold, because the US is so clearly weak, while the US is lashing out because they feel their power threatened. So it’s a double whammy of escalations.
If Pelosi went, would China do something? I think they might do exactly what they said they would do and encircle the island with jet planes until she left, and then escort her plane from Chinese airspace.
I don’t think the US government can win this particular fight they just picked or the bigger war they’re waging on the whole world.
