Britain handed out passports at a rate of one every three minutes to make it the most open country in Europe, it was revealed yesterday.

Research showed 177,600 foreign nationals won British citizenship in 2011 – down from 194,800 in 2010.

The latest figure was the highest in Europe and accounted for one in five of the 783,000 migrants who became EU citizens in 2011 – down 29,300 on 2010.

It meant Britain handed out 54 per cent more passports than France and Spain, which were second on 114,600 each. Germany was third on 109,600.

The majority of those getting British passports were Indians, 26,200 and Pakistanis, 17,500.
