The sound of gunfire, the sight of a car driving away, a dead body on the sidewalk…
Was there any doubt a black did this?
A 38-year-old man was arrested in connection to the South Market Avenue homicide near Fort Pierce.
St. Lucie Sheriff Ken Mascara announced the arrest of Mikeal Terrell Sapp in a news conference Thursday afternoon.
Sapp was taken into custody Thursday morning at a home in Martin County, according to Sheriff Mascara. He was arrested for first-degree murder and was taken to the St. Lucie County Jail, where he’s being held without bond.
“I want to thank the men and women of our agency, the U.S. Marshals Task Force and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office for their dedication in working through this investigation,” Mascara said. “No life should end in violence, but after just 69 hours, the work of these professionals has led to closure for the family and justice for the victim.”
Deputies were called to 604 South Market Avenue Monday just before 1 p.m. on Monday for a report of gunfire, according to Sheriff Mascara. When they arrived, they found one man dead.
“Avery had been shot,” Mascara said. “A canvass of the neighborhood revealed several neighbors who shared information about a dark colored, newer model car seen leaving the residents in the moments after the gunshot was heard.”
According to the sheriff, a local business nearby provided excellent security camera footage confirming what neighbors said and detectives quickly identified the vehicle, as well as who the car was registered and insured to.
“This information led detectives to Mikeal Sapp,” Mascara said. “Today, at approximately 10 a.m., detectives located Sapp in Martin County and arrested him on a warrant for first degree homicide.”
It’s unclear at this time what the motive for the shooting was.
