Hearing Rescheduled for Black Accused of Murdering White Fire-Fighter

Wesley Franklin was shot and killed in June of 2012.

An open-ended plea hearing has been rescheduled for a man charged with the 2012 fatal shooting of an Isle of Hope firefighter.

Brandon Mackey is accused of the June 25, 2012, slaying of Wesley Franklin during an armed robbery outside Deb’s Pub & Grub on Norwood Avenue.

A Chatham County grand jury indicted Mackey in July 2013 on felony murder, malice murder, aggravated assault and several other charges in connection with the killing.

Brandon Mackey has already confessed to the killing but has yet to make a plea to the charges.

Judge Timothy Walmsley rescheduled Mackey’s open ended plea hearing for March 24.

The court is waiting on a detailed forensic report and the results of a competency test.

The trial has been scheduled to start in March 2014.
