John Bolton Stands on Principles, Says ICC is Illegitimate

Apparently, John Bolton is the most principled man in Washington.

I’m not even being sarcastic.

There is zero reason he would be concerned about the US being held to its own standards. Among other things, the Kosovo precedent would make the Ukraine war impossible if the US was held to its own standards. Also, the US would have to tolerate the Russian invasion based on the Iraq precedent.

The US is never held to its own standards, so there is zero reason not to support the Hague coming after Putin.

RT:

Former US national security advisor John Bolton has come out against the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to indict Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling the court “fundamentally illegitimate.”

“I believe and have for many years [that] the International Criminal Court is fundamentally illegitimate,” Bolton told Sky News on Monday, adding that its arrest warrant for Putin is “not something that the United States should cooperate with.”

“It’s a very dangerous institution,” he continued. “It is an exercise of governmental power in a vacuum without any constitutional framework to restrain it.”

The Court’s pre-trial Chamber issued a warrant on Friday for the arrest of Putin and Russian Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova for the “unlawful deportation” of children from “occupied areas of Ukraine.” The charges refer to Russia’s efforts to evacuate civilians away from areas – mostly in the predominantly Russian-speaking region of Donbass – shelled by the Ukrainian military.

It’s such a bizarre way to get the headline (which is obviously what this was all about).

I mean, what is Russia supposed to do with war orphans? Just leave them to die?

I saw on CNN, some reporter had talked to someone who got their kid back from Russia, and he was whining that they had to go through a complex process (which I just assume involved DNA tests). The implication was that it should be easy for people to just request children without evidence they are the parents.

Neither the US nor Russia recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction. Speaking to reporters on Friday, US President Joe Biden said that he believed the arrest warrant was “justified,” but admitted that the court was “not recognized by us either.”

In addition to sanctioning a number of top International Criminal Court officials in 2020, the US maintains the ‘Hague Invasion Act’, giving its military permission to invade the Netherlands were any US citizens detained at the court.

As George W. Bush’s undersecretary of state, Bolton signed the official letter withdrawing the US from its jurisdiction in 2002. As Donald Trump’s national security advisor, he threatened sanctions against anyone cooperating with its investigations into alleged US war crimes in Afghanistan.

lol

While Bolton has maintained for two decades that the ICC is a “direct assault on the concept of national sovereignty,” he argued on Monday that its indictment of Putin could hinder eventual peace talks in Ukraine.

“If you want negotiations to take place, do you think an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin makes it more likely or less likely he will negotiate?” he asked Sky’s Kay Burley. Instead, he suggested that either Ukraine or a hypothetical pro-Western government in Moscow should try the Russian president.

Wait – there’s going to be a pro-Western government in Moscow…?

What does that…

Never mind. Whatever.

I agree with Bolton here completely, by the way, on the matter of the court. So do Russia and China. An international court is a retarded idea. Basically, if there was such a thing as an “international war criminal,” every state that agreed with the charges could issue their own arrest warrants for him and then deport him to the place he committed the alleged crimes. That solves the issue.

What the existence of the ICC implies is that the court could send troops to violate a country’s national sovereignty and arrest someone and then fly him out of the country. This is what Israel did to Nazi “war criminals” in South America, but Israel acknowledges that this was illegal. Normalizing this sort of thing is a terrible idea, and doesn’t benefit anyone in the world, other than whoever is in charge of the Hague.

It’s also notable here that Bolton is talking about negotiations. The Biden government has insisted that there will never be negotiations ever, and they would rather see everyone in the Ukraine dead than negotiate. This would obviously be the normal position of Bolton as well, so the fact that he is talking about negotiations implies, once again, that war hawks in Washington want to wind this thing down so they can focus on China.

Meanwhile, China is clearly trying to force them to do what they said they were going to do. Xi is in Moscow presenting his peace plan, so if the US backs down now, they will be submitting to China. Therefore, they are likely going to feel like they are locked into the war, which then gives China the ability to help Russia.

At this point, I really feel like a serious defeat of the US would be a better outcome than the US fleeing the scene while blaming Marjorie Taylor Greene. China should commit troops, and the Russia/China alliance should take Kiev and occupy it. That is the best outcome. The US started this war – make them deal with the consequences.
