So, Obama met the brother of Fidel Castro. The media is acting like this is some massive deal, though no one seems to be able to explain why it matters.

CNN:

This was the handshake that shook the Western Hemisphere.

President Obama briefly met his Cuban counterpart, Raul Castro, on Friday night at a dinner for the dozens of Latin American leaders convening in Panama City for the Summit of the Americas.

This was historic. The two nations have barely been on speaking terms — officially — for more than 50 years.

The meeting was so important that Bernadette Meehan, National Security Council spokesperson, issued a statement: “At the Summit of the Americas this evening, President Obama and President Castro greeted each other and shook hands.”

What is going to change about the world because the US is on speaking terms with a banana republic? We’re going to get better cigars, I guess. But beyond that, why is this important in any way?

Cuba seems like a pretty cool place, I guess.

I guess it is just Obama trying to create a legacy, and the media is giving him the reach-around by playing it up like it is some monumental feat to be like “yeah it’s been 50 years I guess we’re cool now.”

It may also be that Obama is attempting to secure extra bananas for himself and his family through some kind of backroom dealings.
