Milwaukee police have identified an officer who was shot this week during an exchange of gunfire with a man running from a vehicle that had crashed during a police chase.
Officer Robert Parks, 32, was shot in the leg. His partner, Officer Adam Maritato, 33, was not injured, according to a Friday news release.
Major Artis, the 24-year-old man accused of shooting the officer, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound soon after the incident, police said.
Milwaukee police released the names and photos of the officers and Artis on Friday.
Artis’ family has said they do not believe he would kill himself. A relative told the Journal Sentinel Friday his mother “hates that an officer got shot,” but remains concerned because she has not been contacted by police, nor seen evidence showing Artis was the shooter.
