The man who died during an altercation in a Kroger parking lot Friday night is being called a hero for saving the mother of his children.

The crash occurred in the parking lot of the Kroger at 3600 Soldano Blvd. at about 4:53 p.m. Friday.

Jason F. Barry Sr., 34, was pronounced dead at the scene. Kristina Petree, 33, was taken to an area hospital where she remains in stable condition.

They were high school sweethearts, together since they were 16 years old.

“They were good people, you know. He was a good man,” said Kristina’s mother, Cheryl Petree.

Petree said Barry was also a good father, working to support three children, ages 6 to 16.

“He was a good boy, you know. He didn’t deserve to die like that. Nobody deserves to die like that,” Cheryl said.

She said that Barry and her daughter went to Kroger Friday night on a routine trip for food. She said that Kristina got into an argument with a female driver, who allegedly sped through the parking lot.

According to police, the argument continued when 24-year-old Montez D. Hollins became involved.

Police said Hollins got in his car and sped around the parking lot, eventually hitting Barry and Kristina.

“Jason jumped right in the way right at the time that he was coming, you know, to save her life,” Cheryl said.

Homicide detectives said Montez was driving so fast that after he hit the couple, his car crashed into two cars, knocking them out of their parking spaces.

Barry was pronounced dead at the scene, while Kristina was hospitalized with both of her legs injured.

“She was in a lot of pain last night, but you know, doing a lot of crying and stuff, but she … told me, ‘He saved my life mom,'” said Cheryl.

She told NBC4 that Kristina had two surgeries on her legs, and will have another one soon. Police arrested Hollins and charged him with murder and aggravated assault.
