A leading candidate in Cologne’s mayoral race has been stabbed in what officials are saying is a politically motivated attack.
Henriette Reker – an independent candidate supported by Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU party – was wounded in the neck in the attack on Saturday.
Local police said Ms Reker, 58, was “stable, but not out of the woods”.
Officials said the attacker may have targeted her because of her role in looking after refugees in the city.
Police have arrested a 44-year-old German national and Cologne resident. He told officials he attacked Ms Reker “because of anti-foreigner motives,” according to senior police investigator Norbert Wagner.
The suspect appeared to have acted alone and had no police record, Mr Wagner added.
Ralf Jager, a regional interior minister, said: “The first signs speak for a politically motivated act.”
The attacker will undergo a psychiatric examination to establish whether that was his primary motive or whether he had a health problem.
Another woman was seriously wounded and three people suffered minor injuries as they tried to overwhelm the man.
A spokesman for Ms Merkel said the chancellor “expressed her shock and condemned this act”.
Germany’s interior minister, Thomas de Maiziere, called the attack “appalling and cowardly”.
City officials said the election would go ahead as planned.

A regional congress of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Germany has seen Angela Merkel criticised by her own party regarding her open border response to the migrant crisis.
Adding to her increasing woes, last night the regional congress of the CDU held in the East German town of Schkeuditz descended into recriminations with Angela Merkel criticised by her own party for the “national disaster” that her open door migration policy has become.

One of the delegates told Mrs Merkel that her oft-repeated message to Germany regarding the influx of migrants, “Wir schaffen es!” (“We can do it!”), is no longer being heard by much of the country.
Another delegate held a banner which in translation read “Stop The Refugee Chaos! Protect German Culture + Values. Dethrone Merkel!”
Referencing the German constitution, Mrs Merkel denied that cultural change is on the cards: “Our country has constants. And these constants will not change. We have the Basic Law. And in this Basic Law, there are fundamental rights.”
People are going to be even more angry when they get the bill for these people.
Germany must be ready to pay a hefty price for Chancellor Angela Merkel’s decision to lay out a welcome mat for any and all Middle East migrants who make it across the country’s borders. A German economist has warned that cost will come in massive tax hikes levied sooner rather than later.
The reason German workers will be left with the tab is that most new arrivals are low skilled and will be dependent on social benefits including public housing, food and clothing for years after their arrival. At the same time they are taking from a system they contribute nothing to in terms of tax, with the resulting burden left on those in work and paying into the system.
This is the so-called dependency ratio – the number of tax-generating workers to non-working welfare beneficiaries.
German economist Bernd Raffelhüschen highlighted this cost at a symposium titled “Taxes – Law – Economy” held by the Chamber of Tax Consultants MV on Thursday in Rostock. He said that the only outcome from the migrant influx will be “massive tax increases.”
According to Mr Raffelhüschen, even today there are hundreds of thousands of unskilled unemployed in Germany. “That number will now come up to 1.5 million people to about 70 per cent of whom are also unqualified” Raffelhüschen is quoted by Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

A migrant centre in the German town of Kitzingen is now only employing male cleaning staff after a female cleaner was sexually assaulted there every day for ten days.
Two migrants aged 38 and 52 are now in police custody for assaulting the woman between 1 and 10 October before she finally found the courage to come forward, the local Bayerischer Rundfunk reports.
Prosecutors say the woman was examined by specialist doctors who found signs of abuse, and after finding further evidence detained the two migrants. They are now being remanded in custody and appeared before a district judge on Tuesday afternoon.
The company that cleans the centre has said that from next week it will only be sending men to work there. Until then, female cleaners will be will be accompanied by security guards while cleaning showers and toilets. Showers and toilets will also be closed why they are being cleaned.
Local councillor Tamara Bishop said: “As a woman, what happened here really worries me.”
Ten days in a row though… what type of sexual assault are we talking about? Just groping? Or full-on rape? I mean, after the first two or three times… you’d have to assume she liked it, whatever it was. But that is hardly the point here.
