In my own sunny hometown of Columbus, Ohio, people are feeding their babies fentanyl.

This is of course highly inappropriate. However, I blame the government for not informing people that fentanyl is dangerous for infants. It is perfectly logical for someone to say “fentanyl makes me happy, I’m sure it will also make this crying child happy!”

Alas.

WBNS:

Hilliard police have arrested a mother and father whose infant son died from fentanyl intoxication, according to authorities.

Ehren Schumacher, 39, and Hazel Piuri, 32, were arrested Friday and were indicted on several counts by a Franklin County grand jury.

According to a release from Hilliard police, on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2019, officers investigated a report of an unresponsive infant in the 4700 block of Jeannette Road.

Police say 2-month-old Rhaden Schumacher was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say an investigation by Hilliard police and the Franklin County Coroner’s office found that Rhaden’s death was “due to fentanyl intoxication as a result of his parent’s actions.”

Ehren Schumacher is charged with one count of reckless homicide, one count of of child endangering and two counts of drug possession

It has become clear that there will be no attempt to prevent the trafficking and distribution of fentanyl, so the best we can hope for is that the government will start running some serious PSAs about the dangers it presents to babies.

Fentanyl SHOULD NOT be given as a mood enhancer to anyone under the age of 6 years old.
