Russia Finally Leaving the Council of Europe

The Council of Europe is some kind of council. I guess it’s in Europe.

It’s hard to keep all these different bureaucratic organizations straight, but this specific one was formed in the wake of the Nuremberg Trials to establish precedents and standards for “human rights and democracy.”

The fact that Russia wasn’t kicked out of this organization earlier means that Russia was not seen as violating these “norms.”

Russia will leave the Council of Europe. Moscow is thus following the board’s announcement two weeks ago that it would suspend Russia’s membership because of the invasion of Ukraine – a historic decision.

The corresponding letter from Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov had been handed over to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, the head of the Russian delegation, Pyotr Tolstoy, announced on Tuesday.

“Russia is voluntarily withdrawing from the Council of Europe, this is a balanced and well-considered decision,” said Tolstoy. The Council of Europe monitors compliance with human rights in its 47 member states and is not an EU body.

The head of the international committee of the Russian Duma, Slutsky, also made it clear that Russia’s withdrawal from the Council of Europe would also force it to denounce the European Convention on Human Rights.

“Russia will not participate in the transformation of Europe’s oldest organization by NATO and its obedient EU into another platform for Western dominance and narcissism,” the Russian Foreign Ministry added. The exit will not affect the rights and freedoms of Russian citizens because the Russian constitution guarantees them rights no less than the European Convention on Human Rights.

They made all of these accusations about Putin killing journalists and so on, but that was never an issue with this group, because it was all just media hype, none of which was ever proved.

It’s good to say “we can protect the freedoms and rights of our people without your intervention, thanks.”

Russia joined the organization in 1996, before Putin took power.

Belarus never joined this group in the first place. But I guess Russia had an idea that they were going to eventually make peace with Europe.
