Russia Should Just Tell the Story of Stepan Bandera (At Least in English)

Russia views World War II completely differently than the West. In the West, WWII is just “World War Holocaust.” Russians view it as a large version of a 19th century war, as a war between Russia and Germany. It’s looked at as a bloodier version of that war they had with Napoleon. There is nothing about saving the Jews.

Further, Russia looks at the Jews as something forced on them by Germans. So in the Russian mind, there isn’t really any contradiction between “these Jewish Nazis are coming at us.”

To the rest of the world, however, this doesn’t really make a lot of sense. But RT just keeps calling Stepan Bandera “a Nazi collaborator.”

But this isn’t even true, really. Bandera was arrested by the Nazis and sent to a concentration camp because he kept slaughtering Polish peasants. He exploited the war to go on a genocide – against Poles. He was actually not opposed to Jews, and if anything got along with the Jews. He was definitely not a Nazi.

At the end of the war, he talked the Nazis into letting him out of the camp, saying he would organize his group to fight the Russians. Instead, when he was let out, he just started doing farm slaughters of Poles as the Red Army was marching into Europe. As far as I’m aware, he never fought Russians at all. He did, however, fight the Germans after they let him out when they again tried to stop him from slaughtering Polish peasants.

He was a really weird person generally, and it is very weird to make him a national hero. (Although it sort of makes sense when you consider the fake identity of the “Ukraine” people.) He looked like your standard “arrested for possession of child pornography” booking photo.

He was really just a genocidal maniac obsessed with killing Poles. That is really the long and short of it. Moreover, after the war, he ended up working for West German intelligence.

I meet right-wingers who think he was the leader of some equivalent of the Swedish SS volunteer division. That’s not what he was and he wasn’t even anything close to that. He was just a psycho who wanted to ethnically cleanse Galicia of Poles, and did South Africa style farm murders. He just went along with anyone who he thought could enable him to do that. If the Russians would have had him and let him loose, he would have done the same thing – kill defenseless Polish farm people.

When you understand this is who the Ukraine is celebrating, it makes more sense than saying “Jewish neo-Nazis.”
