Desert Sun:

An arrest warrant was issued months ago for a Desert Hot Springs man who’s accused of shooting someone five times before leading police on a chase Sunday morning.

Authorities had been looking for Altonia Vontae Jackson Jr. in connection to a November 16 car burglary on El Dorado Boulevard in Palm Springs, according to Riverside County Superior Court records. He’s accused of taking a cell phone from the car and trying to sell it via an ecoATM kiosk – which trades money for phones – inside the Walmart on Ramon Road.

On Tuesday, Desert Hot Springs police officially confirmed Jackson is a suspect in Sunday’s shooting. His name was being withheld so they could investigate whether he was involved in other crimes.

Charges against him include attempted murder, home invasion robbery, carjacking and receiving stolen property.

Friends identified the victim as Domenic “Butch” Tallarita. They’re trying to raise $20,000 with a gofundme.com account to cover his medical expenses.

According to Desert Hot Springs police, Jackson shot the victim five times – including once in his head – during a home invasion robbery in the 97-000 block of Vista Del Valle.

Tallarita’s friends added the bullets also struck his kidney, liver, hand and shoulder. He’s in critical condition at Desert Regional Medical Center.

Police say the suspect opened fire on the suspect after being confronted in a garage.

He fled on the victim’s motorcycle and led police on a chase that occurred in dirt areas and on multiple streets, including Little Morongo Road, Dillon Road, Interstate 10 and Highway 62, officials said.
