Trial Date Set for Savage Ape Who Killed Three People, Including Two White Men

Arnett Baines.

A 2021 date is just absurd.

Justice used to be delivered much more quickly in the past, usually with the aid of ropes and trees.

Messenger-Inquirer:

At a pretrial hearing Monday, Circuit Judge Jay Wethington set a March 8, 2021 jury trial date for Arnett B. Baines, who was indicted for murder earlier this year in the shooting deaths of Jay Michael Sowders, Robert D. Smith and Christopher Carie, and an assault on Carmen Vanegas.

On Jan. 17, Sowders, Smith and Carie died of gunshot wounds to the head. Vanegas also was shot in the head but survived.

In February, Commonwealth’s Attorney Bruce Kuegel announced plans to seek the death penalty for Baines, who is being held at Daviess County Detention Center on a $265,000 full cash bond.

Baines, 31, of the first block of Dixiana Court, and Cylar L. Shemwell, 32, of the 1600 block of Wisteria Gardens, were both charged with murder and assault in the January shootings at Sowders’ home in the 900 block of Audubon Avenue.
