A 63-year-old man accused of 26 charges including rape, living off prostitution and supplying heroin is to stand trial in the new year.
Junior Chester Winston Bryan pleaded not guilty to charges at Teesside Crown Court on Wednesday.
The alleged offences concern eight female complainants, including children, and span a period between 1993 and 2013.
Bryan, of Marton Road, Middlesbrough, denied:
* 11 charges of rape, two concerning an underage girl whom Bryan is also accused of assaulting, causing actual bodily harm;
* one charge of attempting to rape a woman;
* four charges concerning prostitution – two of living on the earnings of prostitution, one of causing or inciting one complainant to become a prostitute for gain, and one of encouraging the prostitution of an underage girl;
* four charges of supplying Class A drugs, heroin;
* two charges of indecent assault on one of the rape complainants, two charges of falsely imprisoning her and one of another serious sexual offence against her;
It is alleged the crimes were committed in Middlesbrough, Darlington, Leeds and London.
Bryan is accused of falsely imprisoning one woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, by driving her down a dirt track and “ducking her head under water repeatedly”.
He is accused of assaulting the same complainant by hitting her hands and feet with a hammer.
Bryan appeared in court via video link to Hull Prison and gave his nationality as “English, Jamaican and Caribbean”.
The case was adjourned until a further hearing on December 13 and a trial starting on January 27 next year.
