This is such an inane deflection of responsibility. Truly, the goal is simply to appeal to the lowest common denominator by basically going full “slant-eyed commie rats!”
I wish this wasn’t putting me in the same position as people who are being politically correct and whining about “Chinese virus.” But Trump really screwed this up, and blaming it on China is dumb. He should go out and say the virus was manufactured by the Jews.
AFP:
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday demanded that China share more data on the novel coronavirus as Beijing angrily accused him of lying and said Washington was trying to shift blame.
It was the latest clash in an escalating feud between the two powers over the global COVID-19 pandemic, which was first detected in the Chinese metropolis Wuhan but has now infected more than 250,000 people worldwide and hobbled life in the West.
Pompeo — who, like President Donald Trump, has enraged Beijing by speaking of the “Chinese virus” — said Beijing had a “special obligation” to scientists due to its early knowledge of the illness.
“This is not about retribution,” Pompeo told reporters at the White House.
“We need to make sure that even today, the data sets that are available to every country, including data sets that are made available to the Chinese Communist Party, are made available to the whole world. It’s an imperative to keep people safe.”
This is just dumb.
China is publishing all kinds of data, publicly. If he wants specific data, he should ask for it, and the Chinese will give it to him.
China is being really forthcoming about everything here.
In an interview earlier with Fox News, Pompeo said China “wasted valuable days” after identifying the novel coronavirus by letting “hundreds of thousands” leave Wuhan to places including Italy — which has surpassed China as the country with the highest death toll.
“The Chinese Communist Party didn’t get it right and put countless lives at risk as a result of that,” Pompeo said.
Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying voiced anger over Pompeo’s claim of hundreds of thousands leaving Wuhan, writing in English: “Stop lying through your teeth!”
“As WHO experts said, China’s efforts averted hundreds of thousands of infection cases,” she tweeted.
Yeah, China locked down Wuhan as soon as anyone could have expected them to do so, and instead of dealing with the situation, the US and Europe allowed planes to fly directly in from China.
In a briefing in Beijing, another foreign ministry spokesman, Geng Shuang, said that China had shown “great sacrifice” and contributed to global health.
“Some people on the US side are trying to stigmatize China’s fight against the epidemic, and shift the blame onto China,” he said.
Beijing’s state media took to Trump’s favorite medium of Twitter — which is largely banned in China — to taunt him with hashtags such as #TrumpSlump and #Trumpandemic
Hua said China first told the United States of the novel coronavirus outbreak on January 3, with the State Department alerting Americans in Wuhan on January 15.
“And now blame China for delay? Seriously?” she wrote on Twitter.
I don’t even blame Trump for this. It would be dumb to blame Trump. It is the fault of the entire US government, and probably they were all telling Trump “it’s just a flu, bro, don’t worry about it, those gooks are just neurotic. You know how gooks are.”
And Trump slapped his knee and was like, “yeah, those gooks and their hypochondriac ways, getting all bent out of shape over a gosh-darn flu!”
Meanwhile, the government was selling their stocks before the collapse.
Trump should actually fire people and blame people in the government instead of doing this whole China schtick. Even if people agree and blame the Chinese, China is not a visible enemy and this will not be satisfying to anyone. He should fire Mike Pompeo and blame the whole debacle on him.
I don’t know what he should do. But he’d better do something. Because this is basically going to make it impossible for him to get reelected.
This idea that “China didn’t tell us” just screams incompetence and blame-shifting. Even if everyone didn’t know that Wuhan was locked down on January 23rd and Trump didn’t ban flights from there until February 2nd. Even if everyone didn’t know that after Trump banned Chinese from entering the country, he continued to fly Americans in via “rescue” operations which probably is where the US infections all came from.
It would still look weak to be blaming a foreign country for a domestic crisis.
It would be a much better plan to combine his Coronavirus defense with his QAnon shilling and just start really maxing out on conspiracy theories.
Basically, I should have been called in to manage this crisis.
