Pretty much everyone who was alive during WWII is now dead. And yet, Germans are expected to be sorry for it.
This is happening while the same people spew philosophical gibberish about how where you are born is not a result of genetics, but a “lottery,” saying that anyone can be born in any body, and our consciousnesses are simply distributed at random.
And they claim that “we are all just people” and that no one naturally belongs to any genetic group.
You cannot simultaneously be responsible for the actions of your ancestors, not be a member of any collective racial group identity AND be a random consciousness placed randomly into a random body.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has asked Poland for forgiveness during Second World War commemorations.
Speaking as he attended a ceremony in the Polish city of Wielun, where the first German bombs fell 80 years ago, Mr Stenmeier said: “I bow my head before the Polish victims of Germany’s tyranny. And I ask forgiveness.”
The German president, who was joined by his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda, also condemned the “desire to annihilate” that started the conflict.
The pair attended a ceremony in Wielun in the early hours of the morning, where a minute’s silence was observed.
Mr Duda, who described Nazi Germany’s attack on Poland as “an act of barbarity”, said: “Wielun was to show what kind of war it would be, that it would be a total war, a war without rules, a destructive war.”
I personally do think that we are connected to our ancestors through our genetics, and that we are members of collective groups, so I am not completely opposed to the idea that groups are collectively responsible for the actions of their group, even if those actions took place before they were born. I don’t think it is a personal responsibility for the individual, of course, but those historic actions are a part of who a person is.
This goes both ways: the good things that your ancestors did are as much a part of you as any of the bad things they did.
However, I do not think the Nazis did anything wrong. Especially not to Poland. Poland provoked that war, on purpose, in order to give Britain and France an excuse to attack Germany.
And even if Germany did do something wrong: is there any other country on earth that is obligated to apologize for wars?
